The Olympic Flame’s arrival in Marseille on May 8th marked a significant moment in the journey towards the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. This event, orchestrated through collaborative efforts between Paris 2024, the City of Marseille, the Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolis, the Bouches-du-Rhône Department, and the Sud Region, under the patronage of prominent sponsors Coca-Cola, Banque Populaire, and Caisse d’Epargne, stands as a testament to collective ambition and meticulous planning.

Departing from the port of Piraeus in Greece on April 27th, the three-masted Belem, generously supported by Caisse d’Epargne, embarked on a 12-day voyage across the Mediterranean Sea, carrying the Olympic Flame and a contingent of guardians and scouts. The Belem’s majestic entry into Marseille’s Old Port at 7 p.m. on May 8th was met with fervent anticipation from the crowd, which had gathered in numbers exceeding 150,000 to witness this historic moment.

A trio of symbolic torchbearers awaited the Flame’s arrival on French soil: Florent Manaudou, the renowned Olympic swimmer and quadruple medalist, symbolizing athletic prowess and achievement; Nantenin Keita, a Paralympic champion and advocate for inclusivity, embodying resilience and determination; and JuL, the celebrated Marseille-born musician, epitomizing the city’s vibrant cultural heritage and youthful spirit.

The meticulous planning and execution of the Torch Relay underscored Paris 2024’s commitment to inclusivity and unity, with the selection of both Olympic and Paralympic athletes for the ceremonial handover of the Torch symbolizing the convergence of sporting excellence and social cohesion.

The day’s festivities commenced with the Belem’s procession through Marseille’s northern and southern harbors, accompanied by a spectacular flotilla of over 1,000 vessels, serving as a vivid testament to the maritime heritage and communal spirit of Marseille. This maritime spectacle, spanning six hours, captivated onlookers and showcased the city’s vibrant waterfront.

Subsequent celebrations in the Old Port featured a diverse array of activities, including maritime workshops and artistic performances, culminating in an electrifying concert by Marseille’s own Soprano and Alonzo, courtesy of Coca-Cola. The concert, which drew thousands of spectators, served as a fitting conclusion to a day replete with cultural significance and communal celebration.
