The Fashion World Mourns the Death of Pope Francis

The world of fashion has come together in a show of deep sorrow and heartfelt emotion following the death of Pope Francis, who passed away at 7:35 a.m. on April 21.

Designers, entrepreneurs, and influencers alike paid tribute to the late pontiff. Donatella Versace shared a touching message alongside a photo of Francis: « Rest in peace, His Holiness Pope Francis. » Renzo Rosso, founder of the Only The Brave group, reflected on his personal encounter with the Pope, when he gifted him a pair of white jeans, writing: « Thank you, Pope Francis, for your example, your courage, and your commitment to our planet. »

Federico Marchetti, the visionary behind Yoox, also honored the pontiff by posting « Requiescat in pace, Franciscus » alongside a photo from their meeting, and shared the Pope’s final speech in full. Meanwhile, fashion icon Anna Dello Russo remembered him warmly on Instagram, stating: « Goodbye, Francesco. You were the Pope of the poor, the marginalized, and the persecuted. »

The British royal family also joined in mourning. King Charles III — founder of the Sustainable Markets Initiative’s Fashion Task Force, led by Marchetti — praised the Pope’s compassion and ecumenical efforts. In a message released by Buckingham Palace on behalf of both the King and Queen Camilla, Charles wrote: « His Holiness will be remembered for his compassion, his dedication to Church unity, and his tireless work for people of all faiths and goodwill. His belief that caring for creation is a fundamental expression of faith in God resonates worldwide. »

Tributes also poured in from Italy’s cultural sector. Lucia Borgonzoni, Undersecretary of Culture, emphasized Pope Francis’ love for art and his moving calls for peace in troubled times: « He recognized the essential role of art in our lives, and he touched the hearts of all who work in the cultural field, » she said.

According to the official medical report, Pope Francis died from a stroke, coma, and irreversible cardiovascular collapse. Jorge Bergoglio, born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, was 88 years old. He became pope on March 13, 2013, following the resignation of Benedict XVI. After a recent health struggle, including 38 days hospitalized for bilateral pneumonia, Francis returned briefly to public life, attending Easter celebrations and meeting U.S. Vice President Vance before his condition worsened. His final public appearance was on Palm Sunday, where he greeted the faithful from the Popemobile in St. Peter’s Square, bidding a final farewell to his people.
