Clermont lost another battle in the Top 14 this afternoon, this time against Stade Rochelais, going down 26–13. The task looked difficult for Clermont from the outset: the Maritimes were in superb form, with five consecutive Top 14 wins and a place in the European Cup semi-finals. Clermont have shown their potential with some fine home wins, but their inconsistent form on the road let them down once again.
La Rochelle started at full speed with a try from Boudehent, converted by Hastoy, taking their lead to 14–0. Their second try came from a poorly handled Clermont lineout and a superb kick pass from Dulin to Teddy Thomas, who scored on the right, making it 19–0. The Maritimes secured the attacking bonus point thanks to Leyds’ try in the 60th minute, although Clermont did save face with two tries in the closing moments.
The result, however, was beyond dispute: La Rochelle were the better side. They were solid in defence and made the most of their opponents’ mistakes. Their team was also at full strength, with seven changes from the side that beat Bayonne the previous week, and they held their lead to the end, showing their ability to manage a comfortable advantage.
For Clermont, the situation is difficult. They are currently 10th in the table, ten points behind sixth place, which looks likely to cost them a play-off spot. Their away record is dismal, with just one win and ten defeats. They urgently need to regroup if they still hope to reach the play-offs.
In conclusion, La Rochelle’s victory was deserved: they were the best team on the pitch. Clermont must rediscover their form away from home if they want to hope for a place in the play-offs. The Top 14 remains a tough, competitive championship where every win counts.
