For seven seasons he chose the stars. Now he has chosen himself. The NFL, Apple Music and Roc Nation announced on Monday 26 October that Jay-Z will headline the Super Bowl halftime show of Super Bowl LXI, on Sunday 14 February 2027 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, on the edge of Los Angeles.
The reveal was pure theatre. During halftime of the Philadelphia Eagles against the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football, Apple Music aired a black-and-white film of the rapper sitting alone in the stands of an empty SoFi Stadium, flanked by goats, before a final line appeared on screen: “The GOAT’s out of the bag.” A wink, of course, to the acronym for “greatest of all time”.

From curator to headliner
The twist is that Jay-Z has shaped this stage for years without stepping on it. His company, Roc Nation, has worked with the NFL on the halftime show since 2019, a partnership behind performances by Shakira and Jennifer Lopez, The Weeknd, Rihanna, Usher and Kendrick Lamar. According to XXL, the deal was renewed in 2024 for five years.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell framed the decision as a long-held wish. “I had just one request: that JAY-Z take the stage himself one day, whenever the moment felt right to him,” he said in the announcement, as quoted by Sports Illustrated and XXL.
The moment, it seems, is now. Jay-Z, born Shawn Carter, put it in his own words in a statement:
“From Reasonable Doubt to standing on the Super Bowl Halftime stage, this has been a journey.”
Super Bowl LXI: thirty years in one show
The timing is anything but accidental. 2026 marks the 30th anniversary of Reasonable Doubt, his debut album, and the 25th of The Blueprint. He has spent the year turning those anniversaries into a victory lap. Forbes reports that his run opened in July with three sold-out nights at Yankee Stadium, where the second show drew 45,832 people, the largest concert crowd in the stadium’s history. The tour then crossed the Atlantic for London and Paris, before closing with two nights at SoFi Stadium on 23 and 24 October. The Super Bowl, in other words, will bring him back to the very venue he has just left.
Forbes also notes that this is his first headlining run since the 4:44 Tour in 2017, apart from On the Run II with Beyoncé in 2018. Beyond the stage, 2026 brought JAŸ-Z IN 8, an eight-part HBO series directed by Rick Rubin, and a first No. 1 on Billboard’s Vinyl Albums chart with the anniversary edition of Reasonable Doubt.

Valentine’s Day on the world’s biggest stage
Super Bowl LXI will be the second played at SoFi Stadium, home of the Los Angeles Rams and the Los Angeles Chargers, and it falls on Valentine’s Day. In the United States, it will air on ABC and ESPN, the network’s first Super Bowl broadcast. For Paris, where the NFL has just played its first game in France at the Stade de France (read our story on that historic Sunday), the American football calendar has never felt closer.
No guests have been announced. But the man who signed off on halftime shows for others now has three and a half months to write his own. Expect a set list spanning three decades, from Brooklyn to the Blueprint. As Jay-Z put it himself: “This run continues to be a dream come true.”
